Frank Black - Hang On To Your Ego

I know so many people who think they can do it alone
They isolate their heads and stay in their safety zone
But what can you tell them?
What can you say that won’t make them defensive?

So, hang on to your ego
Hang on but I know that you’re gonna lose the fight

They come on like they’re peaceful but inside they’re so uptight
They trip through the day and waste all their thoughts at night
But how can I say it?
How can I come home when I know I’m guilty?

So, hang on to your ego
Hang on but I know you’re gonna lose the fight

And how can I say it?
How can I come home when I know I’m guilty?

Hang on to your ego
Hang on but I know you’re gonna lose the fight

“ In related news, when Obama orders a drone strike that kills eight civilians — which is to say, his order results in both dead innocents and terrorist recruiting material — the mistake hardly makes news, and certainly isn’t held against him; whereas if, during roughly the same period of time, he makes a verbal gaffe that offends people in Poland, David Frum ends his column about the matter with the single word, “Shame.” In the War on Terror, America is losing its moral perspective. ”

Wu-Tang Clan - Method Man

Not only is this my favorite song off of Wu-Tang Clan’s legendary 1993 debut album Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) but it’s easily in my top 5 favorite old school hip-hop songs of all time (which is obviously saying a lot).  It’s a true classic of classics, and represents the epitome of 90’s hip-hop.  This song is also one of the many reasons why Method Man is my favorite Wu-Tang member.

“I got, fat bags of skunk
I got, White Owl dub
And I’m about to go get lifted
Yes I’m about to go get lifted”

Schoolboy Q - Sacrilegious

I was stunned the first time I heard Sacrilegious…mostly since I hadn’t been truly impressed by any of Schoolboy Q’s music until he released his album Habits & Contradictions.  The song’s lyrics are very provocative and deep.  Both the production and beat are mindblowingly chill, yet the song maintains an aggressive tone.   It’s quite profound, and definitely best enjoyed unsober.  This is also the type of song that gets better the more you listen to it.  So far Sacrilegious is my 3rd favorite song of 2012.  You should also check out my album review of Habits & Contradictions if you haven’t already.
